about

this song, if you're in this far, is actually called "river styx," and anybody who has spent any time around me, has probably heard me play it, I know this because i played it every day or so for a few years, sometimes shelving it for weeks to allow myself the space for a new perspective on it. this recording here is parts I and II.

it felt huge right when i began writing it nearly three years ago, in the summer of the pandemic. it felt so vital that i knew (begrudgingly) that years would pass before i could call it even kind of finished.... well here we are.

at the time it felt so special i almost wanted to scrape it out of myself, because i felt so much anguish at the beginning of 2020, that i wanted to just have something to be happy about. "Let's go nowhere, we can be alone there," is pretty much an adequate expression of how I felt. But I knew the song couldn't just start with "sticks there, stones there.." because it sounds so cliché. So eventually the solution was the stick something else before it... I didn't know the song would eventually grow to be 4 parts, but its part of the allure of songwriting.. you never know.

You never know. that's pretty much what the song's about - those unknown parts of my own self, which are endlessly fascinating to explore... those who claim there's a formula for this kind of thing... are either wrong, or write boring songs..

This particular cut wouldn't exists without Jonas. who shared his beautiful song "lifeblood" with me the same day I began tracking. Only a few days ago!

Wow. So much happens so fast!

I wish I could tell that to myself a few years ago.

lyrics

maybe she's out of time..
maybe she's had enough...
maybe she's had it rough...
maybe she wants your love...

how could you say?
there's no way to know
hope that it's nearly terminal
cause i'm already walking the spiral staircase

blacking out down by the river
i can just take my time
i can just waste my entire day
as long as i've got your eyes
swallow your tokes every day...

as long as you promise it gets me there
how much does a body weigh out in the
cold cold frozen rain?

as long as it gets me high...
..was having a dream so fine
sat in his trunk all night.
how did you know that i want you atop it?

how did you know that i wanted..
as long as it gets me somewhere..

promise i'm getting my fix there
stone dead
makeshift bridge and a
throne there
let's go nowhere
we can be alone there
we can go Saturday
we can leave a kiss at the feet of the
king and the queen of
Nowhere has
clover sewn every way
every day piled up
soon...

baby would you look at her?
sick of the motions..
stuck to this nightmare
running for our lives from the
psycho in the tomb yeah
absolutely sweating cause i swore
this wound's been glowing since i met you
growing since i left you
i';ve been gone since i left you

always said i'd die sane
but in the dark i change for you
the way the weather does...
the way that the weather does..
with clothes thrown every way
every day piled up...
yelling

"everything's fucking sideways"
"everything's going sideways"

but as long as i've got your high
i could just waste my entire life
out in the cold cold stormy night...
out in the morning..

promise i... (idk what i said at the end)
